LANCE GABRIEL C. SANONE: The Pinaglabanan ES Mathematics Whiz Kid in the eyes of a mentor

... attitude was just a manifestation of his childhood for in one corner of his cerebrum, there is a hidden extra-ordinary talent...

As naughty as he was when Lance Gabriel Sanone first stepped at Pinaglabanan Elementary School as a Grade I pupil in 2016, I could still remember how hyper he was in my class. that there would always be chaos if his classmates would not give him turn to answer on the board. When he attended the first session of the Saturday MTAP, the teacher would either comment how destructive he was in the class or how he would tease his other classmates. But this attitude was just a manifestation of his childhood for in one corner of his cerebrum, there is a hidden extra-ordinary talent.

Lance Gabriel’s Mathematics journey started when he was in Grade I. His yearly achievements in Mathematics was evident as he consistently won the 1st place in the Individual and Team Category in the Metrobank MTAP DepEd Math Challenge from Grade I to IV in the Division of San Juan City. Because of these, he was sent to compete in the Area Metrobank MTAP DepEd Math Finals where he won 2nd place Team Category in 2016 (Grade I), 1st place Team Category in 2017 and became a Regional Individual Category qualifier, Sectoral Team Orals Finalist and a Regional Team Orals Finalist of that same year(Grade 2). In 2018, when Lance was in Grade 3 (2018), he received numerous awards in the field of Mathematics as he bagged the 2nd place in the MTAP Area Team Orals Finals.

His Mathematics journey continued to go far especially when he passed the qualifying exam for Mathematics Trainers Guild Philippines. This is an organization of volunteer mathematics teachers committed to promote excellence in Mathematics Education. It seeks to develop the analytical thinking and creative skills of the students through intensive trainings where Lance Gabriel diligently attended as part of the Mathematical Challenge for Filipino Kids Training Program (MCFKTP). This is a 12-Saturday program where the first phase of training ran from August 2017 to March 2018.

In this program, he emerged the top 5 student of the class. As a result, he was qualified for the 2018 Young Mathematicians In-House Intensive Training Program (YMIITP) held last April 2-5, 2018 at the Manila Grand Opera Hotel, Manila. It was then where Lance was awarded as WHIZ KID Qualifier. Consequently, he participated in the 2018 Mathematical Olympiad Summer Program (MOSTP), the final stage of the training program conducted last April 17-May 19, 2018, the MCFKTP on August 2018 –February 2019 and the YMIITP on April 9-12, 2019 respectively. He was awarded as the Grade 4 Top Scorer.

On July 26-30, 2018, he joined the 14th IMC International Mathematics Competition as one of the Philippine delegates in Singapore. This event was composed of delegations from 13 countries where Lance eventually garnered a Merit Awardee. He also joined the subsequent National and International Competitions held in the Philippines where he got some awards; 2018 National Parallel Challenge for the Future Mathematicians(NPCFM), December 8, 2018 – Silver Award, Australian Mathematics Competitions (August 9, 2018) – Distinction Award, ICAS MATH (International Competitions and Assessments for Schools) UNSW University of Southwales Australia (August 11,2018)- Credit Award, SEAMO 2018( Southeast Asian Mathematics Olympiad) September 22, 2018 – Silver Award, and IMAS 2018 (International Mathematics and Assessment for Schools, 1ST (December 1,2018) and 2nd Round(March 9, 2019), CHIU CHANG Foundation , Taiwan – High Distinction Award.

Fast forward to 2019 Metrobank MTAP DepEd Math Challenge MMC when Lance was in Grade 4, he again landed the 1st Place in the Division Team Orals Finals (February 7, 2019), Regional Individual Category (NCR) -8th Place, Sectoral Team Orals (February 23, 2019) – 4th Place, and eventually became a Regional Team Orals Finalist (March 16, 2019). Come August 2-5, 2019, he will be joining the 15th IMC International Mathematics Competition in Singapore.

Surely, more awards and achievements await him in the field of Mathematics this year onwards. With his multiple awards in Mathematics, Lance Gabriel C. Sanone is indeed a pride of Pinaglabanan Elementary School and the Division of San Juan.

Congratulations and Mabuhay!
