Six SJNH-SHS students qualify for DOST-SEI SCHOLARSHIP

March 29, 2020, the Department of Science and Technology - Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI) announced the new science and technology scholarship qualifiers.


Out of 102, 526 examinees who took the 2020 DOST-SEI Undergraduate Scholarship Examination on October 20, 2019, only 9,788 passed. Among these are the six students of San Juan National -Senior High, who successfully qualified for the country's premier scholarship under the RA 7687 Scholarship Program. This program is for academically talented and deserving students who belong to economically disadvantaged families. The passers are Ma. Icymae C. Lee (12-STEM), Adrian M. Ferrer (12-STEM), Ian Brian B. Peňaflor (12-ABM), Fate Hazlene J. Cabangon (12-HUMSS), Patricia Nicole A. Borra (12-HUMSS) and Vienne Gem R. Balasa (12-HUMSS).

Upon signing of the contract, the new scholars will be entitled to receive tuition and other schools fees amounting to Php40,000.00/year, book allowance of Php10,000.00/year, premium group health and accident insurance, monthly living allowance of Php 7,000.00, thesis allowance of Php10,000.00, and graduation allowance of Php1,000.00. They will also receive summer allowance if required in the curriculum. They can avail all these benefits for a 4-year or 5-year course.


The partnership of DOST Pamamarisan and the Department of Education-San Juan brings a significant result for San Jualeňo students. Director Oscar Sevilla (DOST Pamamarisan) has been very supportive throughout the application of the students. They provided a review for student applicants on October 12, 2019, headed by Mr. JR Sebastian, Sr. (Science and Research Specialist) together with three DOST Scholars from the University of the Philippines, Los Banos, who served as the reviewers. Last year, before the conduct of the DOST review, only one student passed the examination.

At the school level, the efficient coordination of Ms. Evelyn Plaza (SHS Faculty) to the DOST Pamamarisan made the application of the students ran smoothly. Ms. Maricris T. Beren, former DOST scholar and Special Science teacher, collected all the requirements of students reviewed and submitted the application forms to the scholarship division of DOST-SEI. Also, she provided some useful tips on how to pass the examination. Apart from congratulating the successful qualifiers, Ms. Ma. Aileen B. Callorina, Assistant Principal II added, " Kudos to all the teachers who have been their connection or bridge, helped and inspired these students a lot to make their future bright.”
