Project HAPAG aims zero non-reader in San Juan

A total of fifty participants attended the Seminar-Workshop on Project HAPAG: Hakbang sa Pagbasa on January 20-22, 2020 at Hacienda Gracia Resort and Hotel in Lubao, Pampanga. English Supervisor Ms. Marnelli Tolentino started with the presentation of data to establish the gaps in students’ achievement scores. Then, Filipino Supervisor Ms. Eulafel Pascual and Nicanor Ibuna ES principal, Ms. Marina Aunzo, gave an orientation on the Department’s Reading Program termed as 3Bs or Bawat Bata Bumabasa from which Project HAPAG hinges on. There was also a demonstration of some reading strategies that teachers can use in skills development for the Big 6 priorities namely, oral language, phonology, phonemic awareness, vocabulary instruction, fluency, and comprehension.

Likewise, principles of the HAPAG modules were discussed highlighting the values and the mindset needed to ensure the success of the program. Lead trainer Ms. Rowena Bambo, narrated her journey of dealing with Learners with Special Educational Needs (LSENs) and shared practical tips on meaningful engagement with the pupils that lead to skills development and actual learning. Moreover, Ms. Sharon Rose Felipe emphasized the importance of proper assessment so as to maximize the learning potential of pupils who will be enrolled in the program. They also taught the teachers on effective monitoring and evaluation that will capture the progress of each child who will be using the modules. The workshop on using songs as teaching tools was an instant hit among the teachers as these can spell fun for the learners.

During debriefing sessions and interview with participants, they shared their grateful appreciation to Ms. Bambo for her insights and practical tips on dealing with struggling readers. The flow of content was relevant and gave them a clear focus on the challenges that awaits them as intervention teachers or beginning reading specialists. Further, their whole stay in the resort was delightful as they enjoyed the relaxing ambience and the generous serving of food. Likewise, they were happy for the copies of the modules they received. Principal-consultants, Dr. Lucila Artuyo (San Perfecto ES), Ms. Marina Aunzo (Nicanor Ibuna ES), and Mr. Lloyd Tulaylay (San Juan ES) were also appreciative for the slots given them in this seminar. Their exposure on how Project HAPAG unfolded in the Division of Caloocan gave them insights as to how else they can run this project in their respective schools. National trainers for Literacy Instruction, Ms. Magdalena Rosopa, Ms. Ma. Lucila Anatalio, and Ms. Emma Carolino, facilitated the session on Handling Reading. Dr. Jonas Feliciano Domingo, Learning Resources Supervisor, served as the Master of Ceremony who also provided key insights in the management of learning resources. ![endif]--

In closing, Ms. Ruth Morada of Kabayanan ES, composed this poem as a synthesis:

HAPAG

By: Ruth V. Morada, Kabayanan ES

Ayon kina Ma’am Marina at Ma’am Eula

Pagtutuunan ng pansin mga batang ‘di nakababasa

Turuan silang magsalita nang magsalita

Upang masanay at mawala ang hiya.

Salamat kina Ma’am Anatalio at Ma’am Carolino

Buong pusong gampanan an gating trabaho.

Para sa nagpataas ng aking balahibo,

Ma’am Rowena G. Bambo

Maraming-maraming salamat po

Ako po ay sumasaludo sa inyo!
