National Orientation on the Special Education Curriculum

The National Orientation on the Special Education Curriculum was conducted last 8-11 October 2019 at the Tanza Oasis Hotel and Resort, Tanza, Cavite. The orientation was designed to provide relevant information and understanding of the concepts, components and principles of the K to 12 Transition Curriculum for learners with special educational needs (LSENs).


Ms. Nica Regine Lico tackled about the updates on special education curriculum. Additionally, Mr. Harold Espiritu showed the data on special education SY 2016-7017 and 2017-2018. “We need to push the boundaries until learning has no limits”, stated Prof. Marie Therese Angeline Bustos. She discussed that learning is not just dependent on the person. Disability is an interaction between what the person has in the environment. She encouraged all the participants that we would be able to manage and create an environment that can support not just those with disabilities, but support people who are different from us because many children not only with those disabilities hurt and our hurting because they are different.


Mr. Greg Tabios Pawilen reiterated the K to 12 Transition Curriculum Framework for learners with special educational needs. He mentioned that transition program is the heart of the education system, the last hope to fulfill the promise in helping, guiding and empowering individuals. It is the transition program will give them life and help them appreciate who they are that will strengthen and empower to become a citizen or holistically developed individual and also leads them to a better life.


Ms. Sheena Jade Manuel discussed about the policy guidelines on the adoption of K to 12 Transition Curriculum for learners with special educational needs (LSENs). All the concerns about the LIS, protection for the children, admission, retention and promotion for LSENs were deliberated.


The walkthrough of the K to 12 transition curriculum such as Care Package and Life Skills Package by Mr. Harold Espiritu; Pre-Vocational Package and Functional Academics Package by Ms. Sheena Jade Manuel; Enrichment Package and Livelihood Package by Ms. Nica Regine Lico; and Career Skills Package by Ms. Tina Amor Buhat were discussed and explained.


Also, Dr. Roland Montes, Regional Supervisor in NCR, presents the Regional Action Plan for the implementation of the K to 12 Transition Curriculum.
